UNSUCCESSFUL GAOLBREAKING.
HAITI HOUSEBREAKER’S ESCAPE AND RECAPTURE. Shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday it became known in town that? a man named John Wilson had succeeded in making his escape from tile local gaol and was at large. Wilson is the man who was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court on a charge of burglary of Mr. W, F. Cederwa ll’s residence last week, and was to have been escorted to Auckland on Saturday morning’s boat. When his escape was discovered, Constables were despatched in all directions searching for him, but they did not meet with any success until the afternoon. - Shortly after dinner information was received from the vicinity of deLautour Road that a man answering the description of the escapee was in that locality. Sergeant Hutton immediately went out, and discovered his man hiding behind a building in course of erection. Observing Sergeant Hutton approaching, Wilson took to his heels across the paddocks, but was quickly overhauled by the sergeant, who secured his prisoner after a short struggle and brought him to the police station. it is thought that Wilson must have succeeded in making his escape very soon after 8 a.m., when a couple of inmates of the gaol, in charge ol Constable Davy, were engaged in fatigue duty in tlie watch-house. To do so he must have) come from the gaol yard into the yard of the police station, round the building, and out of the front gate. He evidently made for Kaiti, and about the middle of the day called at a house in deLautour Road, where, at his request, he was provided with some dinner. His hosts, however, having heard that a man had escaped from custody, became suspicious and informed the police, a course which resulted in his re-capture.
