MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE

INVERCARGILL, May 1. At a meeting of the executive of the Farmers’ Union the follow'ing remits, among ethers, to be submitted to the annual conference, ■were received : lliat a protest bo entered against the alteration of tho size of grain sacks; that exception be taken to the action of the Southland Acclimatisation Society in securing the protection of hares' that imported timber be placed on the free list, and no distinction be made in railway charges as between imported and New Zealand timber ; that steps be taken to secure immigration suitable for farm servants, especially ploughmen; that first-class railway trucks, at second rates, be allowed to farmers; that when valuations are bein" made a valuer should be appointed by° the farmers to act m conjunction with the Government valuer; that taxation on land, and on money lent on land, be put on a more equitable basis. One branch will submit a motion *eorretting the Dreadnought action without first consulting. Parliament, executive will submit as a remit that tl’ie contract system of public w^ b( j reverted to as more satisfactoiy than co-operation; that injustice is caused bv taxation of growing flax; that.a protect be entered against the continuance in case of valuations of unimproved rural lands; that the Government be urged to amend the laws so as to enab. every settler to have the option of. acquiring a freehold of lands for settlement- It is understood that the dairy, regulations will be generally reviewed and dealt with.
