V hen twelve ( [avs out she ran into an immense icefield that took three days and four ii'mhts to traverse. The ship travelled 343 miles in ice. Some of the bergs were 700 feet high. The difficulties of navigation were increased by a dense fog. The Me.etta had several narrow escapes from being •crushed, hut escaped undamaged.
