CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING,; The monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Board -was held last evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and Messrs J. R. Kirk, J. Maynard, Geo. Darton, and W. Pettie. . On tho application of Messrs deLautour, Barker and Stock, an elderly female pensioner was granted permission to become an inmate of the old people’s home, on payment of 15s per week. Two applications for assistance in distress were referred to, and were left in the hands of the visiting committee, to act immediately. Dr. A. P. Coker applied to the Board for payment of his account in connection with his attendance on a woman named Rose Kenvin at the time of the birth of her child.—lt was,decided to inform Dr. Coker that the Board could not accept any liability in the case in question. ~ y The custodian reported' that at last meeting there were 14 'inmates of tlie Home, one was admitted since, and one died, leaving a total of 14 still in the institution. He also wished to thank Mesdames Townley, Fitzwilliams, W. L. Rees, E. D. Smith, Rev. Hamilton, “A Friend,” and the Taruhcru Library for the gift of books and magazines, and Mr. Wootton for buns. The estimates committee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Pettie and Somervell, presented the estimates for tho current year, and recommended that they be approved of. Their report stated: “The passing of the estimates as written will entail a rate of a trifle under 1-11 of a penny in tho £ upon tho capital value of all rateable property in the Counties of Cook and Waikohu and the Borough of Gisborne, being made up as under: Cook County, £3,460,000—-£1218; Waikoliu County, £1,346,000—£480; Gisborne Borough Council, £1,000,000— £360 10s; Government subsidy, at £ for £ £2OSS 10s. Making a total of £4117, being in tlie proportion of l-3rd for Charitable Aid, £1377; and 2-3rds for Hospital, £2740. It is suggested the amount be levied from the local bodies in four equal instalments, payable on Ist July, Ist September, Ist November, and Ist January.” Tlie statement attached to the report showed that the estimated receipts for 1908-9 had been £5275, and the actual receipts £4-737 Is 6d. The difference was mainly due to tlie fact that the Government subsidy had been £1553 14s 9d, instead of £2527 10s, as expected. The estimates of charitable aid expenditure for 4909 —10 hvere: Old People’s Home £750, allowances £IOO, medical £25, burials and fares £oo, outside institutions £75, maintenance or children £125, administration £ro, and miscellaneous £SO. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr. W. Pettie, the'report and estimates were adopted. Messrs Clayton and Boland were appointed the visiting committee foi tlie month. . ' Accounts amounting to £/b were passed for payment, and tho meeting cone luded.
