A NEW YEAH. Last evening another twelve months of municipal work was commenced by the installation of the Mayor and a number of new Councillors. We have heard a good deal lately concerning the necessity of “deeds,, not words,” in connection with municipal matters, but Councillors, nevertheless, considered the opportunity for speech-making too good to be missed; whilst the Mayor likewise gave a lengthy address. There was little that was fresh in these speeches, , but, while disclaiming the necessity for their utterance, it must be recognised that the tone of the speakers was quite admirable, and, if tongue and heart spoke in unison, the utmost harmony should prevail during the ensuing Mayoral year. Under ordinary circumstances, chief interest would naturally centre in the policy outlined by the Mayor, but as His Worship’s views have already been widely circulated, there is no need to dwell upon them in detail. The attitude of the new Council seemed to be that the members would work conscientiously with His Worship in endeavoring to improve the condition of the town. Once the inaugural speeches had been disposed of, the new Council got down to solid work, and managed to get rid of a quantity of. routine business. It is to ho regretted, however, that the bad practice of wasting time, which ,prevailed in the last Council, was again adhered to, with- idle result that, the .
meeting was protracted till nearly midnight. A notable incident at the meeting was the receipt of an unofficial communication from Mr. Marcliant to say that from 1 preliminary investigations lie had made he was satisfied that he could formulate a sewerage scheme for the Borough that would cost under £60,000. This, of course, is a sum considerably lower than the figures quoted either by Mr. Mestayer or Mr. Jickell, and approaches approximately what we think the community can afford to pay for its sanitary requirements. Mr. Marchant’s report will therefore be awaited with the keenest interest.
