A POLICY VOIDED.
(Per Press. Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Alay 6. A case of interest- to insurers against fire, as well as to insurance companies, was decided, at tho Alagistrate’s Court this afternoon by Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M. T. Dixon claimed £IOO from the Australian AUfance Assurance: Company, tho value of a policy over a building situated in Montreal Street, which was destroyed by fire on January 3rd. The case was heard on Thursday last, and the evidence showed that for years the building had been occupied by Europeans, and insured as a dwell-ing-house. Subsequently it was rented ■to Chinamen, who carried on a laundry business, and during their tenancy it was destroyed. The insurance company were not notified of the alteration or they would have increased the premiums. as a laundry, in their gpinion. was a hazardous risk. They contended that the alteration voided the policy, and refused to pay. After hearing legal argument the Magistrate hckl that the company were quite justified in acting as they did, and gave judgment for defendants with costs.
