Waikare, Auckland, May 12. Maheno, South, May 12. Waikare, South, May 16. VESSELS IX PORT. Coronation, ketch. The U.S.S. Co.’s Squall arrived from Tologa Bay and Auckland yesterday morning alter a fine passage dowii the Coast. Her cargo for this port , -included: 3800 feet of timber, 82 tons of salt, S4O sacks,of coke, and 60 sacks of coal, and a quantity of sundries. The Squall was to have returned to Auckland at 7 p.m., but owing to several members of her crew not putting in an appearance., she was prevented from doing eo. She leaves this morning al 7 o’clock.

The folowing were the shipments from this port by the Tvser Company’s Whakarua: 16,175 carcases of mutton, 5166 carcases’ iamb, 1196 quarters of beef, 305 casks of tallow, 111 casks pelts, and 124 bales of wool. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.’s Arawa took the following shinmeuis from this port: 9640 carcases of mutton, 4012 carcases of lamb, 1041 quarters of beef, and 189 casks of tallow and pelts. The U.S.S. Co.’s Mokoia arrives from south early this morning, and leaves later for Auckland and Sydney. The. Tuatea leaves the wharf at 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.

The U.S.S. Co.’s Monowai returns from Auckland to-morrow afternoon, and continues her southern trip during the evening. The Tuatea leaves the -wharf on arrival and at 5 p.m. The U.S.S. Co.’s Flora was clue to leave Picton yesterday for Napier, and proceeds from the latter port this- afternoon for Gisborne, leaving here tomorrow morning for Coast ports and Auckland. The Tuatea leaves the wharf with outward passengers at 8 a.m. The Westport Coal Co.’s Regulus left Westport at 6.30 on Thursday evening for Gisborne direct, and is due here tomorrow evening. Captain Gibbons, late of the s.s. Moa, is in command, Captain Mitchell having resigned from the

| company and accepted a position of I master of. one of the Westport Harbor Board’s dredges. The following have booked passages for north by the s.s. Mokoia this morning:—For Auckland : Misses Anderson. Thompson, and Preston, Nurses Reid and Cook; Mesdames Whisker, Wright, Barrett, Simeon, Smith: Messrs jt. Hall, H. Smith, Davis, Wyllie, Kent, f Barrett, Smith, H. Kane. For Syd- : ney: Miss MoKinlay, Mesdames Murray and child, and Bennett, Messrs :f ; Cooper and J. Broad. _ ' Thejbarque Cambnsdoon is still lying r at anchor in the stream, delayed by f want of sailors to complete her completement, says the Christchurch ‘•'Press” of a recent date. Two have already been engaged, but three men are still wanted, and Captain Howes has wired to Wellington to try and obtain them there. Three sailors dese'rtj ed when the vessel came alongside the - wharf a week ago, and five more are _ in gaol. The latter are to he put on board when the ship is ready to sail, but it is stated that two of them have refused to work after they are sent.on board. It is understood that Captain Howes signed them off the articles, but that the authorities insist on their being put on board the ship, "whether they want to go or not. The Board of Trade have issued the following suggestions received from tT7e Admiralty with a view to improving 1 and facilitating night signalling in the mercantile marine:—(1) The body of 1 the lamp should be so constructed as to be capab’e of standing the heat generated inside. (2) The light should bo . sufficiently powerful to be read at a dis- ; tance of at least two miles on a dark » night with a clear atmosphere. (3) | The arc of visibility horizontally should : he not less than about 130 degrees. (4) ! The shutter should be worked Jby hand, j and so arranged that, when it is clos-' ' ed, the light is entirely obliterated, and ■| when it is open a full light is shown. ; (5) The shutter should be capable of 1 making eleven words a minute. (6) It 4 is desirable that the lamp should bo so 4 arranged as to use either an electric '$ light or an oil burner alternatively. That these recommendations should i emanate from the Admiralty is of particular interest, seeing that their chvn >: pattern of lamp—which has been adoptb.or! b.y a number of shipowners—does not kfulfii the requirements. It is unfortufjiate in any case that some such authoriitative statement as this was not issued r earlier, because there are all manner of ■ lamps in the market and in use which -answer none of the requirements.
