CONDEMNED AUSTRALIAN MEAT.

CA BLE; NE WS.

A STATEMENT. FROM SYDNEY.

A MISTAKE SOMEWHERE

United Press Association —Copyright,

(Received May 7, 9 p.m.)

SYDNEY, May 7. r

In reference to the shipment of:Australian mutton recently condemned at London, it was shipped from Melbourne to the order of a. firm of Sydney exporters, after “being twice officially inspected, as of fair average quality in good condition. The principal firm concerned cannot understand the reasons for condemnation. They have been shipping for years and never had a complaint. The - meat in question was ewe mutton, officially classed as secondgrade.* The carcases averaged 471 b each. The .firm canot see how it is possible to describe them as wasted and emaciated.

[A cablegram despatched from London on April 3rd stated: The attention of the Hon. T. A. Coglilan, AgentGeneral for New South Wales, has been drawn to the fact that 1255 sheep sent to Liverpool by a Sydney firm were sold to a dealer at the Central Markets, 400 were despatched to the provinces, and the remainder were stored at Sriiithfiekl. On the owner examining them he ca’led the Chief Inspector’s attention to the consignment, and obtained the return of the 400, with the result that 812 were seized 'as unfit for food, being mainly in a wasted and emaciated condition. The sheep bore the following label, “'Seized by consigners. We desire this meat sold. Fit for human consumption.” It is pointed out that such a label has been regarded as a certificate of official inspection at the time of slaughter.]
