Five thousand people were present. The Australians’ first innings closed for 389. The scores were as follows: Bardsley, c Oates, b Wass... 63 Carter, Ibw, b Hallam 61 Gregory, c James, b Wass-. '. 2 Trumper, b Hallam "... 94 Ransford, lbw, b Wass 4 Armstrong, not out. ...106 Cotter, c Alletson, b Hallam 22 Laver, b Hallam 17 O’Connor, lbw, Hallam 6 Whitty, b Hallam 0 Sundries' 20 Total 389 Bowling analysis: Wass, 4 wickets for 107; Hallam, 6 for 144; Iremonger, 0 for 75; John Gunn, 0 for 42; Hardstaff, 0 for 11. Bardsley obtained 54 runs in 57 minutes. Carter played a capital-innings, with fine cutting, the second wicket • falling for 123. The next three wickets fell rapidly. Bardsley batted for 95 minutes after Ransford’s dismissal, the fifth wicket being, down for 145. A good partnership commenced . between Trumper and Armstrong. Both commenced carefully with small hits, and an occasional fourer. Trumper gave a hard chance at 140 to Jones left hand paid off Hallam. At lunch the cecond centui*y was up for 250 minutes’ play. The batting was brilliant, eleven resulting from one over of Har.dstaff’s. Trunlper’s half-century was made inside- 70 1' minutes. Shortly after resuming Trumper lost his wicket whilst trying to pull Hallam. His innings was brilliant after a quiet start, and occupied 110 minutes. The score included 12 tourers. Armstrong made 55 in 59 minutes without a mistake. The sixth wicket fell at 287. Armstrong became much j freer. Cotter gave a chance when ] seven. Indulging in hard hitting he 1 sent up a tremendous skier, which was , missed by the wicketkeeper Oates. Armstrong’s century appeared fo.£. 170 minutes’ play. It was a flawless innings, and he wasi cheered. He made one fiver, four of which were from an overthrow, and ten fours. NOTTS (second innings). The weather was delightful, and the attendance good. The home team made a poor showing in their second innings, the Australians securing an easy victory by an innings and 6 runs. Laver did not field owing to a slight strain, a substitute taking his place. Hardstaff in his second innings was c’ean bowled by Armstrong. Payton, before scoring, gave a chance to Whitty at mid-off, off Cotter. The fourth wicket fell at 81, the sixth at 97, the century being hoisted after 140 minutes play. Alletson' batted 25 minutes, his score including two sixes. He drove Whitty over the ring to long-on, and lifted Armstrong out of the ground to square leg. With his departure the end was soon reached, the last two wickets only adding a single. (The Australians .will begin their second match to-day, against Northamptonshire, at Northampton.] SURREY V.
