THE HON. J. CARROLL IN GISBORNE.

The Hon. James Carroll, Minister foi Native Affairs, with Mrs. Carroll, arrived in Gisborne on Saturday morning from the south. In conversation on Satruday the Minister said he will probably remain in his constituency for a week or two, and will meet the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. R. McKenzie, on his arrival from Opotiki- on Wednesday. He had been kept very busy in Wellington since the last election, and except for his visits to North Auckland and to the Waikato in March last, had been very little away from the capital city. The' Native Department had been kept very busv. The Natives of Northern Waikato'had submitted a proposal to the Government to set aside 600,000 acres for settlement by lease, sale, or Native occupation. Tlie bon. gentleman said that, as far as he was aware, there was no truth in the rumor that had been circulated, about his probable retirement from the Cabinet, and acceptance of a seat in the Legislative Council. The rumors had their foundation in tbe imagination of those who made them, people who probably wished they were founded upon truth. . _ r « „ Parliament would meet, Air. Carroll said, probably during the last week in. June, and in all probability the session would be a heavy one, as the Government intended to bring forwaid some important measures as already outlined by Sir Joseph Ward.

Morcan (secretary) of the Gisborne High School Board, met Mr. Carroll, and conferred with him as to the proposal to seek legislation for obtaining a site for a High School. The draft Bill was o*o up through, and one or two alter atious made. The Minister promised Mr. deLautuor to use every endeavor to facilitate the passing of the Bui, and the subsequent erection of a High School capable of accommodating the scholars of this district, who require secondary education. hon. r. McKenzie.

The Hon. James Carroll last evening received the following telegram from the Hon. 11. McKenzie, from Opotiki: —“Just arrived at Opotiki, leavi„o- Monday for Reid’s. Expect to reach Motu at o'p.rn. Tuesday, and Wailiohu same time on Wednesday, if weather favorable, not* looking too good at present.” . My. Carroll will go to Waikolni on Wednesday afternoon to meet the Minister for Public W orks.
