In the course of a speech at Sydenham the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr C Allison, made reference to tlio finances of the tepid baths. During the ten •and a half months the baths had been in operation the. revenue obtained £BO9 2s Id. The Avorking expenses hacl been £4.po 17s 3d, leaving a gross surplus of £358 4s lOd. The interest and sinking fund absorbed about £203, ancl Av-lien this had been paid the net profit for the time the baths had been in operation was £95 Is 6d. Some time ago the Auckland Boaid of Education expressed an opinion that something should be done in the direction of encouraging SAvimmmg he young people of New Zealand. I lie matter was referred to the headqua - tors of the Swimming Association, askino its ooinion as to making swimming and life-saving compulsory subjects, at a meeting of the Board last week. It was to the effect that it would be difficu.t to do this without interfering uth other work. If swimming were substituted for woodwork and cookery for a part of tho year the idea d { rible in the case of most of the city ancl suburban schools.
