Wliitty, Carkeek, . Hopkins, and McAlister were omitted from the Australian team. The weather was dull, the wicket was good, and the attendance moderate. Northamptonshire won the toss and elected to bat. They made a poor start The first two wickets down for 18, and the fourth for 56. Vials played good leg-side cricket, but gave a chance to Bardsley in the slips off Cotter when his score was 7. At luncheon the score •stood five wickets for 75 runs. Wells was 60 minutes) at the wickets, and gave a good display of vigorous driving and pulling, and finally returned a hot one 'to Armstrong, which the bowler held. A smart return from Ransford was responsible for East’s dismissal. Thompson played a sound, steady game, and batted 140 minutes. He gave a chance to Carter at the wickets when he had scored four off O’Connor. The seventh wicket fell for 142, the eighth for 168, and the ninth for 181.
The Australians’ bowling analysis was as follows:—Cotter, two wickets for 46 runs; O’Connor, one for 41; Armstrong, two for 47; Macartney, four for 40; Noble, nil for 8. Australia has four wickets down tor 133 runs. AUSTRALIA (Ist innings):

(Received May 12. 5 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. Hartigan lost his wicket in attempting to play back one from Smith. His score included three fours made off the second over. The first wicket fell at 67, and the second at 101. Noble’s innings lested seventy minutes, and bis runs were mostly the result of late cuts. Smith disposed of O’Connor and Carter with successive balls, the latter succumbing to the first delivery. The fourth wicket fell with the 6core at 122. Bardsley played free, faultless cricket, and was especially strong on the leg side.
