PALMERSTON N., May 11. The conference of Chambers - of Commerce of Hie East and West Coast today resolved —“That owing to the serious loss of life at railway crossings, the time has arrived when the Government should -appoint crossing-keepers to guard the railway line in busy thoroughfares.” ./ ' i , ; A CHARGE OF SMUGGLING. SOUTHLAND EMPLOYERS’ ASSOCIATION.
Tho Southland branch of the Employers’ Association decided to confirm the resolution recently passed _by the Advisory Board protesting against the inclusion of preference to unionists clauses in industrial awards. It was also decided to recommend employers to observe June 3 as a. general holiday in preference to May 24th.
