OUR TIMBER.
The most ordinary reflection suggests that the Forests ought not to be under the Department of Lands, for the simple reason that it is,the special province of that Department to settle the lands. Settlement, at all events, is the first consideration with the Lands Department. But the first consideration of a Forest Department ought to be the forests. There may be disputes between the two; probably will be a good many. These ought to have the advantage of disinterested authority, unbiased by either desire* to ma'ke settlement take? the first place, or to put the growing of trees before any other sort of growth. Anyhow, when the Department of Forests is properly established. it ought to be independent of the Lands / Department.— ‘‘Southland News.”
