LONDON, May 12
A long technical discussion took place in the House of Commons on the duty on foreign beer, club licenses, and land values duties. Mr. E. G. Pretyman (Conservative) enumerated eight heavy taxes borne by land, and said it was an injustice to add four when incomes were derivable from the land. It would be a great burden, not on the great landowners, but on the owners of small properties, who did not possess other resources.
Mr. Lloyd-Georgo accepted the Unionist suggestions to change the duty on clubs from 3d in the £ on the value of tho liquor sold to 6d in the £ upon that of the liquor purchased. Captain Markham (Liberal member for the Mansfield Division of Nottinghamshire) accused the Government of preventing the House of Commons from raising the poundage owing to fear of be enormous political influence of the clubs.
Several members advocated that the poundage charged to clubs should he equal to the license fees of publichouses.
