CRIMINAL SITTINGS

CHRIST CHURCH, May 12. At the Supreme Court to-day Ludwig Hoft, charged with assault, with intent, was acquitted. Christopher Isaac Denby, ex-stationmaster at Leeston, was sentenced to six months for the theft of a parcel from the railway station. William Anderson was sentenced to 18 months’ for receiving stolen property.
WELLINGTON, May 12. At the Supreme Court to-day George Williams and William Thomas were each sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and John Trainer to 18 mont-os for assaulting a man with intent to rob. Alfred Bumicle, for theft from Ngahauranga railway station, was sent to prison for 9 months. Arthur New, for stealing a ring from Miss Ray. a barmaid, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. Bernard Smith, a mid-dle-aged man, was convicted of indecently assaulting .a little girl at Karori. Justice Chapman 6aid that this was one of the most serious offences and one of which the consequences might, in the future, be far reaching. It was necessary that it should be known, as widely as possible, that all judges regarded ""this crime as one of the worst character that could be brought before the court. The prosoner would be sentenced to five years’ hard labor. Alexander McMillan, charged with forging a receipt for a telen h money order, was found not guilty.
