THE EAST COAST RAILWAY.

[To Tun Editok.]

Sir, —The pmanioc of the .Minister of Public Works in Gisborne at tire present tune is a matter which net only concerns this district, but- the whole of the North Island. The question of railway construction on the East Coast has been debated at considerable length, but until the Hon. Minister or Public Works’ visit to Motu, and his experience of the short cut from 'the old Opotiki road to the new Pakilia track, can it be said that ho had the faintest idea of what roads are really like ou tlie East Coast. It is stated that the Hon. James Carroll did not venture as far as Waikohu to meet him. Therefore wo can join heart and hand with our Motu friends when they ask for further railway construction,, and that at a rate which lias not hitherto been attained. With the widest part of the colony, that is, extending from the East Cape to the western shore, with its rich UriSvera country (with all its countless millions of gold yet to bo explored), and the two million acres of Native and Crown lands (which we know) lying in an unproductive state, what would you say ? The Hon. Minister oi; Public Works is a Scotchman.—-I am etc., W. J. P. GAUDIN, Sec. East Coast Railway League.
