HOUSE OF COMMONS ANGRY. CLUB LICENSES. United Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, May 12. The House of Commons is becoming increasingly angry at Mr Lloyd George’s tentative and indefinite proposals, and the plea that the resolution must be passed before the House is informed what the Finance Bill contains. Mr Lloyd George admitted that the tax of 3d in the £ upon sales at clubs would be, easily evaded by increasing the subscriptions. He explained that Gd in the £ on the purchase of liquor would obviate the need of employing a clerk to register sales. He promised to consider Mr Austen Chamberlain’s suggestion of a sliding sca’e. THE LIQUOR TRADE’S ACTION. MAKING TAXATION PROFITABLE. (Received May 13, 9.45 p.m.) May 13. The Right Hon. Herbert Samuel, Under-Secretary for Home Affairs, estimates that as the result of the row taxation tlib liquor trade is fastening on the public an increased price of twenty millions sterling to meet taxation amounting to four millions. THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTER BURY’S DECLARATION. ORGANISED OPPOSITION IN IRELAND. (Received May 14, 12.00 a.m.) The Archbishop of Canterbury, at the festival N of the sons of clergy, stated that if the Budget became law £50,000 annually would he lost to the Ecclesiastical Commisioners’ funds for the benefit of the poorer clergy. The Lord Mayor of Dublin presided at a meeting of various public bodies in Ireland, at which resolutions were carried protesting against the Budget, and appealing to all Ireland to form a committee to combat the proposed taxation. •
