SMUCCLED ARMS.

STATEMENT BY THE “ENGLISH-

MAN.”

DISCARDED ARMS SOLD WITHOUT PRECAUTION.

United Press Association —copyright

CALCUTTA, May 14. Regarding the Commonwealth statement that the discarded rifles were twisted and flattened beyond repair before the sale, the Calcutta newspaper “Englishman” insists that Martinis bearing tho Australian mark were smuggled in as cabled. They wero found mostly in the hands of the largest frontier tribe. The “Englishman” suggests that originally part of a consignment was sold to Australia by the Indian Government, and subsequently, when discarded, they were sold in the open market without precaution. MELBOURNE, May 14. It has been ascertained 1 that the Federal Government in 1905 sold 13,000 Martini-Henri rifles to the British firm of Greener and Company,, who in turn resold to reputable English firms.
