Total for eight wickets ... ... 161 Tho weather was cloudy, with frequent showers. There, were 7000 people present. Bardsley lost his wicket in Lees’ third over. Ho batted for 100 minutes, being skilful, but uncertain. The same over saw Hartigan, who filled tho vacancy, put the first hall tamely into Hayward’s hands at point, the sixth, wicket falling for 85. -A bumping ball caused Macalister to put up an easy one in the slips. Three wickets fell in six overs. The eighth wicket fell with the score at 97. Then a hallhour’s partnership between Macartney and Cotter ensued, and there was some smart running between the wickets, Macartney making neat strokes. Then Cotter lost liis leg stump when trying to drive Rushby. His score included one drive for six. Macartney brought the innings to a close by skying Lees to Spring at nud-011. The innings lasted 155 minutes. . Heavy showers of ram stopped further play. Some time after lunch the weather cleared, but was unsettled. Surrey made an inauspicious start, the third wicket falling for 27. Hayward was watchful, making line hits occasionally, and secured five for an ondrive off Noble. Crawford was placing unevenly. When he had ten on lie played Macartney on without dislodging the bails. The light grew bad. and play was stopped for 25 minutes. Ram was also falling. An oil-break of Armstrong’s dismissed Crawford, who batted for an hour, the fourth wicket falling for 75. Hayward surely and steadily swelled the score.
