STEAMER’S NARROW ESCAPE.
RAMMING AN ICEBERG.
Whilst on her voyage across tlie Atlantic, tho s.s. Purnessia, of the Anchor Line, had a narrow escapo. She was bound from Glasgow to New York, and has arrived at Sandy Hook with bows smashed in and extensive damage below tho water-line. Her fore-peak is full of water. It appears that off the Newfoundland banks in thick weather, the vessel came into collision with an iceberg. The blow was a severe one, and there was a slight panic among the passengers on board, which was speedily subdued. The vessel’s fore-foot bore tlie brunt of the blow, and tho water immediately commenced to rush in. The water-tight compartments were closed and fortunately these held. /The Purnessia is of 5557 tons gross register, and 'll as accommodation for over 1400 passengers, but a good number of the berths were vacant.* Vessels crossing the Atlantic at tho present time are warned to keep a sharp look-out, as several steamers have had narrow escapes owing to the prevalence of icebergs, which appear to ho drifting southwards.
