INSPECTION BY COLONEL BAUCHOP, O.C-D.

Jn the Garrison. Hall last night the Gisborne Rifles, commanded by Captain Poore, with Lieutenants Mitchell and Coleman in attendance, and the Gisborne Defence Cadets, under Captain Zacbatiali and Lieutenant Somerville, paraded for inspection by Colonel Baiieliop. officer commanding the district. ■The Rifles mustered 42, and,the Cadets 20. r rhe Rifles were put through physical drill exercises- under! Acting-Ser-geant McLaughlin, and the Cadets were instructed in field work by the Colonel. \t the conclusion of inspection, the Colonel shortly addressed the volunteers and expressed himself as well, pleased with them. He impressed <m them the need of always attending paiade, so as to render themselves efficient, as they might at any time be called on to defend their country. Long service stars were then presented hv the Colonel to the following:— Quartermaster-Sergeant Williams, Seigeant Bait (2), Color-Sorgeant Seott, Sergeant Breingan, Corporal Holmes, aiuf ex-Sergeant Taylor. ANXU AL ENCAMPMENT. The members of the East . Coast Mounted Rifles, who are encamped at Makanri, had a held day yosterdaj. The squadron paraded at the encanij meat in the ‘ morning, and afterwards proceeded to the properties of White, Williams, and Black at AAhataupoko, whore extensive field operations in extended order were carried out.. A detachment was told oft to, defend the town, and it was the duty of the remainder to endeavor to ( ns ■lodge Ahem from a very strong position.
