CELEBRATIONS IN AUCKLAND

The celebrations of the Sehvyn centenary. arranged in connection ivith the diocese of Auckland, took place yesterday, and Avere largely attended, the GoA'ernor taking part in each of ihe tAVO functions. In the afternoon Lord Plunket laid the foundation stone of the Patteson memorial wing of tlie St. John’s College, at Tamaki. This Aving Avill form the first- instalment of the school of the future ini the permanent building of St. John’s College, Avliich Avas founded by Bishop SelAvyn in 1842. The total cost of the new Aving Avill be about £6OOO. It Avill accommodate about 30 students, and will' also provide accommodation for the valuable, library presented to the college by Dr. Kinder, a former warden of the college. Tn the course of their speeches the Bishop of Auckland and the Governor both strongly adA r ocated the proposal that St. John’s College, Avliich was not merely a- theological college, should become a residential college affiliated to the University of Noav Zealand. Last evening a public meeting, presided oA r er by the Bishop, Avas held in commemoration of the centenary. Speeches Avere delivered by the Bishop, the Governor, Hon. Dr. Findlay. Messrs. J. H. Upton, and Hon. E. Mitchelson.
