A CHILDREN’S DREADNOUGHT FUND.

DARGAVILLE, May 24. The school children, acting on the suggestion of the chairman, Mr. F. J. Dargaville, have opened a penny Dreadnought fund. All the schools in the Dominion are to be asked to open a similar fund, the amount subscribed to be handed to Sir Joheph TVard, with the request that a Mece of silver lie purchased and placed in New Zealand s first Dreadnought as a gift from the school children of New Zealand.

The heat in Palmerston North yesterday Avas intense for May. It was accompanied in the afternoon by a heavy down pour of rain, which lasted fully an hour. So far an exceptionally mild winter has been experienced. The stock is looking well, grass being abundant.
OLD AGE PENSIONER DISAPPEARS
HASTINGS, May 24. An old age pensioner, Frederick Thomas Farr, aged 66 years, a carpent—er. disappeared on Friday, and lias not been hoard of since. He left a note, “Feel deserted by everyone; am going away anywhere.” The police acceptmt as a case of suicide, as Farr had previously made an attempt on lib life. PRICE OF MEAT REDUCED. WELLINGTON. A man giving the name of Percy - at Iviim, and describing lnmsclf as a ti.iveller for the Cascade Brewery, of Hobart, was arrested on a charge of stealing jewellery to the value of Ulo ios from the boarding house of Annie Cowan Christchurch.
