ROWING.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSi
TRALIA.
PEARCE v. THOROUGHGOOD
Harry Pearce and Ben Thoroughgood measure blades over the championship course on the Parramatta on the 29th inst. The race will be rowed against the tide. Both men are now on the river doing fairly solid work. The programme is two rows daily, with land work in addition. The champion has done a pretty hard week’s work, rowing at the rate of 27 and 30. Ben’s weight is now a little over 13 stone. Jack Mitchell, who is matched later to meet George Day, gives him pace. Mitchell takes some 200 yards start, and finishes strong. George Towns, from whose shed he is training, lias just finished a very fine shell for Thoroughgood ; she. is a nice-looking craft, and looks as if she will carry the big man well.
The ex-champion, Harry Pearce, who lia- done a. good amount of work from his owp boatshed, Middle Harbor, is now on the course with Peter Nelson, who is getting him into excellent condition. His weight is now in tlie vicinitv of 12.11. Harry will use the boat'in which lie put up such a good performance against Arnst. He is training from Peter Kemp’s shed at Abbotsford, and is going very well. He is feeling a lot better over the distance, ancl finds that George Day suits him nicely as a pace-maker.
