Sixty runners started on Saturday in tlie “Marathon” race from Windsor to Stamford Bridge for the “Sporting Life’s” challenge trophy of the value of £SOO, to 'be held by the. winner for 12 months. [The proprietary of the London “Sporting Life” has given a £SOO trophy for an international race to be conducted annually by amateurs. The prize is a perpetual one, and the winner of the event each year is to receive a valuable memento, which, it was stated, would take an uncommon form. Although born, in Ireland, Frank Hewitt’s father (Major Francis Slturry Hewitt, of H.M. 24th Regiment) was a Guildford '(Surrey) man, 'whilst his mother was a native of Bristol: Frank Hewitt arrived in Australia on December 10, 1869. Ho was, in his day, a veritable champion of champions, and was good over any distance from 50 yards to a mile. His 880yds in lmin 531 see on the Riecarton Road, Christchurch, N.Z., is still tlie world’s best professional recortd, and considering the nature, of the course, a relatively better performance than C. H. Kilpatrick’s 1.53 2-5 on a fine track in New York in 1595.
