RETRENCHMENT.

If the Government intend to make reductions in the staff of the Civil service, and there does not appear to be any other effectual way of retrenchment, it should give the men ample warning to look for other work. Those who have occupied Government billets for a. few years are not fitted for other occupations., and it is but right that any who are displaced should have ample information to enable them to look ahead. Whatever' the future Public Works policy of the country may bo, parliamentarians should see to it that the public service does not become overgrown and that too much money is not paid for the luxury of that service.— “Mataura Ensign.”
