SHIELD MATCHES, Tho mid-week championship matches were continued on the Domain yesterday instead of Thursday, owing to the holiday. Tho games were played on No. 1 ground, and were fast and interesting. Y.M.C.A. (1) v. KIA KAHA (0). Ivia Kaha took tho field with seven men, but before the end of the first spell were reinforced. Y.M.C.A. attacked most of the first spell, and from a combined run of the forwards Davy scored. From this out the game was very evenly contested, Kia Kaha, ii anything, having the hotter of tho play. No further scoring took place, and the game resulted in a win for Y.M.C.A. by 1 to nil. For the winners, Pine, Baker, and Russell played best; while for Kia Kaha Grant, Tabernacle, and Garrett were the most prominent. Mr. Armstrong (City) refereed. CITY (3) v. CIVIL SERVICE (1). This was also a very dorse game, each side taking their share in attacking, but City were superior in shooting power, and notched three goals, per Corbett (2) and Davy. Civil Service had hard luck several times in not opening their account, but Stagpoole eventually irot through and registered a neat goal. For City, Armstrong. Day, and Coekerill played well; and for the losers Payne. Stagpoole, and Hargreaves worked hard to avoid defeat. Mr. IL Giant was referee. TOURNAMENT AT HASTINGS. ~XAPIER, May 24. Empire Day was observed as a close holiday in Napier, and there was a good attendance at the football sports in Napier and the hockey tournament and football sports at Hastings. The contests at the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association’s annual tournament at Hastings resulted as follows ::—Ladies Seniors: Won by Clive. Ladies Juniors: Won by AYaipti (Napier). Men’s Juniors: Won by .St. Matthew's A (Hastings). The men’s senior contest is unfinished, and lies between Zingari and Albion. ______M AXGATU SPOBTS. The annual sports gathering held at AYhatatutu yesterday was largely attended. Tho weather, though dull, wafine, and some good racing was witnessed.
