LONDON, May 25.
The resolution for increasing the excise charges on spirits was carried by <243 votes to 126, the Nationalists and Scotch members strongly opposing the: increase, and Mr. Lloyd-Georgo justifying a cautious estimate of the yield. •He alleged that the trade might add water, otherwise the publicans’ profit under the new duties would be four millions, so they had no cause for complaint. Mr. Balfour dwelt on the inconsistency of attempting to crush the trade and presenting it with four millions. Mr. J. F. Hope {Conservative member for Central Sheffield) proposed a 25 per cent, preference on Imperial grown tobacco in the interest of India and vSouth Africa. The motion was rejected by 185 votes to 57.
