CHARYBDIS AND SCYLLA.
"Wo do not express the view that Sir Joseph Ward will not embrace the opportunity to attend the Conference, but it'will be one of the riskiest journeys he ever made. His country calls, but there is a decided echo, so loud and so persistently distinct, that on<v might, be forgiven if he went either way. There is expected to be a strenuous session, in which Sir Joseph must seek for larger borrowing powers or tell the House that he intends to retrench to the extent of the fall that has been experienced in the revenue, or that is expected to be experienced. He already has to face a disclosed difference of over £600,000 between this year and last, and it may and possibly will grow before the end of the pi'esent financial voar to over a million. It can readily be seen therefore that the position is a serious one for Sir Joseph, and apparently there is no hope for his seeing London again this voar.—I‘'"North 1 ‘'"North Otago Times.”
