A SLAUGHTERMEN’S DISPUTE

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 26. The Conciliation Council sat at * Plymouth yesterday to consider ad; pute between the Auckland Slighter men’s Union, tor whom Mi Bust (secretary) appeared, and the L rnouth, Stratford, and Hawera Boiough Councils, as owners of the mnn,c pri •abattoirs,’ and the A\ aitara. and I at - freezing works, the propnoto.s The latter were represented l)j 5 U I’rvor and Grosvenor. Mi. I. tlaiie Giles the new Commissioner presided. Mr Pryor applied to have the names of the Borough Councils struck oft the citation, and adduced evidence to sho that there was no dispute. Thcie had been at one time n dispute between the employees and the Now Borough Council, hut it was settled in February bv an agreement by which the men secured far higher wages than provided bv the Auckland award, which the Union desired to see adopted. Ihe new Plymouth men, before the Comnussionei, declared that they were perfectly satisfied. As far as Hawera and btratfoitt Councils were concerned they were not employers, as they let their slaughteiin<r bv contract, and the contractors emnloyed their ovrn labor. Further there was a. branch of the Auckland slaughtermen’s Union in Taranaki, who should have instituted their own proceedings. The Commissioner had no hesitation in granting the application. _ I lie remainder of the dispute concerning the ireczin ir -works is to be investigated by a conferenee at Waitara to-day in an endeavor to arrive at an amicable settlement. A vote of thanks was passed to the Commissioner for the, manner m which lie had conducted the proceedings. on the, motion of the secretary oi the local union, seconded by Mr. Pryor.
