WORKS TO RELIEVE THE

UNEMPLOYED

WELLINGTON, May 27. The Wellington Harbor Board had. under consideration today the question of proceeding with new works with u view of affording some relief to large i numbers of unemployed at present in Wellington. It was resolved to immediately proceed with the works recommended by the engineer, involving the expenditure of about £40,000. The- Chairman, Mr. T. M. Milford, M.P., in explaining the attitude of the Board, said tint the members had been actuated with the idea of affording: some relief to the serious distress now existing, but at the same time be desired to emphasise the point that not a shilling was being spent which had not been recommended bv the engineer, go that the Board would get full value for its monev.

Dr. Newman (Mayor of "Wellington) said that the City Council would cooperate with the Harbor Board as far as possible, and had already endeavored to meet the difficulty in starting useful works. >
