ALLEGED PERJURY. [Pep. Press Association.] WAIROA. May 27-. A native named. Puku Waata was committed for trial for perjury in his evidence on a charge of stealing a rug last month. A QUESTION OF OVERTIME. WELLINGTON, May 27. Dr. McArthur, S.M., delivered a judgment to-day in the case of the Inspector of Awards v. Denliard, claim £lO. a penalty for alleged breach of the Wellington bakers’ award in connection with the payment of overtime. The Magistrate held that the wages paid wore substantially those the men were entitled to. He regretted such" cases should come before the Court, as it was such pin-pricks that- cyused friction lietween employer and employee. Judgment was given for defendant. DRIVERS’ UNION AWARD. The award for the country in connection with the Drivel's’ Union was filed to-day. It provides tor a week's work of 471 hours, exclusive of the time required for attendance on horses, and a reasonable time occupied in going to and from work and stables, but _not exceeding fifteen minutes each. Work before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m. will bt paid for at overtime rates. Spoeia arrangements may be made re attend ing early and late trains and steamers. Aerated water and cordial makers’ drivers’ hours are 48 per week in April and October, and 60 hours per week for the rest of the year. The minimum wage for Wanganui is £2 4s for single horse, and £2 8s for two or mote , horses. In all other parts o£ the industrial district the wages are £2 3s and £2 7s. Livery stable-keepers and ‘bus and cab proprietors are exempt from the award, which is to be dated from June 1. THE - TRUTH” LIBEL CASE. A new trial is to he applied for in Christchurch to-day in the libel case, T. W. Stringer. K.C.. v. There was a large gathering of townspeople, and addresses were given by the Hon. Geo. Fowlds. Mr. Maginnity (Nelson Education Board chairman), the Mayor (Mr. Greenwood), and Mr. Colvin, M.P. The Minister received numerous deputations and inspected the harbor work ■ the hospital, and the school. He leav overland for Wellington via Chris church, accompanied bv Mrs. and Miss Fowlds. to-morrow morning.
