CAREEES FOR WOMEN .
W 7 hat does Dr. Batchelor expect women to do with their lives, looking at the matter solely from the standpoint of the choice of career? A considerable percentage of women nowadays must look forward to themselves, at least for) some portions of their lives, and it is surely wise for them to fit themselves for the struggle of life as best they can. In a perfectly ideal state it is conceivable that, regarding all women as prospective wives and mothers, the community might refuse to allow them to waste their energies on working for a living, but such a scheme of things is at present utterly utopian, and taking me ■as it is we can hardly blame women for deciding that they will find a caieei for themselves and preserve their independence and self-respect by making their own living, rather than wait like the aimless and futile heroines in early nineteenth century novels for a domestic felicity that may never be theirs, or for duties and responsibilities that they may never have to assume. “Auckland Star.”
