PORT OF NAPIER.
INNER HARBOR SCHEME
[Per Press Association.]
NAPIER. May 1. Speaking at the Niven dinner on Saturday evening, Mr. Geo. Nelson had something interesting to say concerning his inner harbor scheme. It his scheme were adopted, lie said, they could have a splendid harbor, into, which they could bring not one or two of the Union Company’s boats, but lour or five, and these with big ocean going vessels, would be able to he snug out of harm's way, and close and handy. The vessels would bring work, and factories would be erected, so that in a few years the business of the town would be so increased that they would be bringing down an electric current from Lake" Waikaremoana. That was a splendid prospect, eh? (Loud applause). Electric power might have been brought from Lake Waikaremoana a few years ago but for the introduction of suction gas. They •would remember that he had a scheme and the figures worked out. He might also state that the late Archdeacon S. Williams was prepared to put a large sum of money into the scheme. That statement, ho thought, had not been made public before. Had he understood at that time that Archdeacon Williams could have financed the whole scheme quite easily, it is probable that they -miofht now have had electric power froTn Lake Waikaremoana, instead ot having the question deferred for a few Proceeding, Mr Nelson said /that when the time, came for those present to vote on his inner harbor scheme ho did not think they would need any direction. Neither the majority of the people of Napier nor the majority ot the people of the country would. It was a question whether, if the breakwater was ever necessary or right, it should be turned down. He hoped to see the people terminate it with readiness. .
