The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. THURSDAY, JUNE 3,1909. AN UNFOUNDED REPORT.
Some wicked pressman has been ‘guilty of disrespect to our worthy 'Mayor .and Councillors. In his capa'city of agent for the United Press Association ho informed the readers of 'journals subscribing to the Association that the Council’s last meeting did not terminate until a quarter to three in the morning. To this, of course, no exception could bo taken, for there is little doubt that the effect of such a paragraph would he not only to emphasise the importance of a town whose ‘public affairs necessitate such. lengthy consideration, but also to elicit admiration for the whole-souled loyalty of our City Fathers in woiking strenuously for the public good, whilst ordinary self-seeking individuals are asleep in their beds. Unfortunately, the callous ponriian aforesaid was not satisfied with the simple statement of fact already referred to, but, with unparallelled mendacity, added that the Mayor and a section of the Council were at loggerheads. 'What wonder that His Worship, whoso harmonious relations with members - of various public bodies are the subject of universal comment, should protest against such an unwarranted insinuation ! Vigorously he repelled the charge, and one by one the Councillors rose to tlicir feet and, figuratively speaking, “fell on Mis •Worship’s neck’’ whilst endorsing his rem’arks. The incident provided a most touching evidence of personal esteem, and no one who heard the heartfelt tones of the speakers could doubt the sincerity of the affecting utterances they delivered. At the moment only a spontaneous outburst of “For he’s a jolly .good fellow” was required to complete this gratifying and timely tribute to the popularity of His .Worship the Mayor with his colleagues. "Wherefore the Council very properly decided by a unanimous voto to inform the United Press Association that the report supplied to it was incorrect, inasmuch as the Council is not at logger he ads with the Mayor, and its proceedings are not protracted in consequence thereof.
