THE DREDGE ENGINEER.
[To The Editor.]
Sir, —Kindly permit me- to reply to “Greaser” re appointment of eugincei of dredge. Mr. Long has been in Poverty Bay district about 4 years, has worked in the engineering shops here, and also for the Harbor Board «s anengineer, which makes him, I submit, a local man. lie; is a member of tho Australasian Institute of Mamie Engineers (who do not admit as members those who have not served an apprenticeship to engineering), he holds a marine engineer’s certificate (one of the few that are here), and is . therefore qualified as- such. The Harbor Boaad, T contend, was not called upon to invite applications to fill Mr. Alackic s place during bis absence on leave; tho usual custom in such cases is for the engineer desiring to leave to recommend a man whom he knows to be qualified for the appointment.— etc. Secretary, Gisborn Branch Australasian Institute of Alarino Engineers. Gisborne, 3rd June.
