Co.’s Maitai is due to return from Auckland on Sunday afternoon, and sails again for South in the evening. . It is reported that the Union Company’s training ship Hartford, which arrived at East London last week with a cargo of grain from Melbourne, has been fixed to load a cargo of. iarrah at Bunburv (West Australia) for New Zealand. Y , Captain U. Stewart took charge of the Rotoiti on Saturday, that vessel having gone into the West Coast service, in place of the Araliura. Captain McLean took charge of the Takapuna. Captain J. Robertson, of the MOllO- - has taken charge_of the Maitai, in place of Captain M. Livingstone, who has joined the Manuka in place of Captain W. J. Newton, the latter being on holiday leave. - Eclipsing all her previous fine steaming feats (says the Melbourne “Argus ’) -the Tvser line' steamer Star of New Zealand arrived off Alton a last week from London direct. She accomplished the voyage in the excellent time of 41 days 3 hours and 19 minutes, or about 20* hours less than her next best performance. The trip was not without incident, however, several large icebergs being sighted whilst the v essel was crossing the Southern Ocean from the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope. The first berg was passed m )at. 52deg. 21min. south, and lon. 50deg. 30min. east, soon after the steamer sighted Hoard Island, which, being covered from) base to summit m snow, had all the appearance of a huge berg itself. Again, when approximately in latitude 54deg. 17min. south, and lon, ]Q.4deg. 27niin east, the vessel klghted bergs, two of which were estimated to be about 300 ft high. The •proximity of these formidable impediments naturally caused Captain Haider and his officers to keep an exceptionally sharp look-out. Upon one occasion the course of the steamer had to be altered to clear a berg, which however, wap seen for some considerable time previously from the ship. It was not found necessary to reduce the speed of the vessel for an instant. Intensely (cold weather prevailed during the 1 <>reater portion of the run across the | Y< easting/ y "the lowest latitude icacliecl -being 55deg. south.
