Morse. Judge, Mr. J. Lopdell. • Slipper, Mr. Grey. Slip Steward, Mr. C. Lasker. Field. Stewards: Messrs R. Davidson and *F. Clerk. Hare Steward, Mr. W.-Whitfield. Flag' Stewards: Messrs Cahill and McPherson. Fa vored with ideal weather, the first day’s coursing of tho initial meeting of the Poverty Bay Coursing Club was a complete, success. There was a very large attendance of both ladies and gentlemen, over 1500 being present, many of whom were witnessing 'the sport for the first ' time,. and the fringe of trees along the side of the prettily situated plumpton afforded a welcome shelter from the heat of the sun. The convincing ground itself was in excellent order, and the fence was gaily ornamented with parti-color-ed flags, giving the ground a truly holiday appearance. The coursing, on the whole, was excellent, and the. only drawback to the proceedings was the fact that owing to the slips not working too well, several of the dogs got away before, it was intended they should, and thus several hares were killed, which would otherwise have had more than a sporting chance of reaching their place, of safety. An excellent view of the coursing is obtained from the grandstand, arid tho .sympathies of the spectators wore evidently with the hare, a round of app’auso being heard when puss succeeded in eluding her hot-footed pursuers, and regaining freedom. Mr. C. Morse, hen. secretary, was indefatigable in his attentions to tho wants of everybody, and he was ably assisted by many of the club members, who constituted themselves into a willing band of helpers. Messrs Grey and Lasker alternately carried out the all-important position of slipper, and tho decisions of the judge, Mr. C. Lopdeld, of Hawke’s Bay, were received in each case with entire satisfaction. A number of outside dogs competed, hut those locally-owned mere than held their own against tho visitors. Luncheon and afternoon tea were supplied by Mrs. Erskine. Three bookmakers were present, hut did not appear to be doing a great amount of business. THE OPENING CEREMONY. Coursing' commenced shortly after 11.30 a.m., and after three heats had. been decided the groijnd was formally declared open by. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), patron of the club. In the course of his remarks, the Mayor said that he wished to congratulate tho promoters of this new sport in Gisborne. The large attendance and successful commencement augured well for the future of the club. It was necessary that all classes should be catered for in matters of sport, and the club certainly deserved every encouragement. He had been requested to apologise on account of any weak liares being Jiberated, and reminded his hearers that several of the hares had only been on the ground a very short time, and not long enough to become acquainted with the'excellent means of escape that had been provided. He concluded by expressing a wish that with the suggested additional improvements added by the club, tho promoters would have the .satisfaction of seeing the sport firmly established in the district, and that not only they, but the public, would reap great benefit thereby. Cheers were then given for the Mayor, the promoters, and Mr. C. : Morse, and coursing- was proceeded with, His Worship releasing the hare for the next run. THE COURSING.
