MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, June 4. At -a mooting of the University Council to-day, it was resolved to confer the status of professor on the following gentlemen at present/ engaged as lecturres at the University:—Air. D. R. White, education; Dr. Colquolioun, medicine; Dr. Barnett, surgery; Dr. Roberts, pathology; Dr. Ogston, medical jurisprudence and public health; Dr. F. 0. Batchelor, midwifery and gy neology; Dr. Linclo Ferguson, op* thalmotoTogy; Mr D. B. Waters, metallurgy and assaying.
PROPOSED CHAIR OF DOMESTIC SCIENCE.
Mr. John Studholme, of Coldstream, wrote to the Council offering £2OO a year for three years to endow a Chair of Domestic Science in the Otago University. the first, payment to be made as soon as the professor actually takes up the position. Tho stipulations that he makes are that a Chair of Domestic Science and not a mere lectureship be established, that a fully' qualified professor be appointed, and that the Council use its best endeavors to get a course in domestic science admitted by the Senate of the New Zealand University. Some time since a similar offer was made to the. Canterbury College, but the authorities, after giving the matter lengthy consideration and entering into negotiations with Miss Gilchrist, of tho Tennessee University, decided not to entertain the proposalThe Council spoke very favorably oi the offer, but as the donor did not seek a final answer till November, it. was decided that a" sub-committee he appointed to consider tho, proposal.
