The weekly meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Literary and Debating Society was held last night, the Rev. W. Lamb presiding. Interesting and instructive readings and recitations from the works of British poets were given by different members. Air. C. G. Bloore gave a short discourse on each of the poets.
Air. J. W. Witty has received a large number of messages of condolences from many friends, including the Hon. James Carroll, expressing sympathy with himself and his family in the bereavement sustained through the death of Airs. Witty. Air. Witty desires to thank all who sent these kind messages.

The top-dressing of tar that is being put- on Gladstone Road brought unpleasant consequences to an elderly sxentlemaii yesterday. A gust of "wind lifted his hat, a bowler, and'carried it on to the newly-spread tar. The o.d o-entleman stepped on to the wet tar, and as he stooped to recover his headdress he slipped and fell full length on to the road. ‘ He was very much blackened when he regained his feet, and his hat was unwearable.
The “Dominion’s” Alasterton correspondent says: —The fact that not a member of the Opaki Rifle Club has l>een selected to go with tho New Zealand team to Australia has been very adversely commented upon. It is felt that the performances of at least half a dozen members of this club would bear favorable comparison with that of any of the selected men, and no team can be truly representative of the best shots of the Dominion without the inclusion of one. or more of them.
According to some of the leading grocers of "Petone, near Wellington, who were questioned on the matter by a “Post” representative, the innovation of tho early closing hours is proving a success. It is better for themselves. they say, and causes no inconvenience to tho bulk of the shopping public. Ou Saturday evening, when all the shops closed at nine o clock sharp, instead of half-past nine and later, the takings did not fall below the average. The customers, it was added, lvdd accepted the new system without much murmuring, only a few isolated complaints having been made.
An incident is related by Air H. G. EH AI.P., whrv. recently came to the North Island as of the Timber Commission, to, show the value of kauri 'gum land. A' 1 party of Austrians, numbering ten members, purchased from a widow who owns a farm, tho right to dig on an area covering about ten acres, for the sum of £l6O. Another par tv of ten Austrians came along and paid the first party £l6O to- share in the concession. After a time a third party of ten paid the same price for the privilege, and ten more Austrians also paid the same price. The widow gets £l6O as a kind of royalty. but the first party of ten gets £4BO and retains the same rights as the other thirty Austrians to dig for o-um. Air Ell did not credit the story when it was told to him, but states that inquiries he made confirm it.

Feeling and humorous references were made to the loss of Mr. De Costa from among tho bachelors of Poverty Bay by Messrs F. Hall, H.. E. Maude, G. Tv. Fasley J Colley T. Adams. J. F. Fettle, E. M. Button, and \ Murray, all of whom wished him and tlie future 'Mrs. DeCosta long life, prosperity, and happiness.- Mr. Do Costa suitablv replied, and thanked lus Friends, for their handsome gift, At the conclusion of the gathering Mr. A.
