HOOKEY NOTES

(By “Cleft--Ash.”)

Last Thursday’s match, City v. Kia Kalia, was a very good go, and City were, indeed lucky to win, for the Kia Kalia 'Club had the best of tho game, and should have scored at least four goals, but faulty shooting and hard hitting spoiled their chances every time. City have a very fair forward team, but with tlie exception of Armstrong, their backs are weak. I might say very weak, and I am afraid they Avill find that out to their cost Avhen West End meets them to-morrow. The Kia Kalia Club played an average game last Thursday. This team has a very strong back division, ‘but tho weakness at present lies in tlie forwards; they will not keep their places, and another great fault is they hit too hard in their opponents’ 25, when quick short passes are all that, is required. Tlie first round ends to-morrow, Avhen City meets West End, and Y.M.C.A. meets Civil Service. Whoever Avins out of the first two is on toil for tho first round,j and whoever loses of the other two is at the bottom of the list, so tlie matches will be fights for first and last places. I hoar the. local Association have put in a challenge for the' Shield held by Auckland, and now await a date to bo fixed. If I remember rightly a challenge Avas sent in last year, but nothing came of it. Why, 1 know not, but sincerely hope the same thing won’t occur this year.
