RETRENCHMENT
[To thk Editor.]
Sir,—l see by the press all ever the Dominion that the Government are using the “pruning knife,” as it is termed, pretty freely. I also see that they have spent a lot of money onbringing people from England, and I also see that the ranks of the unemployed have grown very largely of late. Sir, “Charity should begin at home is an old and true saying, and I will tell you why. Some years ago when, the Atkinson Government took' office they used the “pruning knife” pretty freely, but they—bo it-said to their honor—began by lowering their own screws. Now, I should like to know if the present Government lias given any consideration to their own retrenchment, or are they going to continue drawing their fat salaries? —I am, etc., “INQUIRER.”
