HAWKE’S BAY LAND BOARD
; YESTERDAY’S MEETING. (Per Press Association.) NAPIER, 'Juno 11. At tho meeting of the Hawke's Bay Land Board to-day, Mr. Eustace. Lane moved, in accordance with notice of motion—" That this Board, while approving of the proposed purchase of Mr. McKersey’s Tangoio estate for dost' settlement, draws the attention of tho Government to the suitability of much of the. Hawke’s Bay province for closer settlement, and considers that money borrowed for closer settlement constitutes a far better defence of these islands than the offer to Britain of empty Dreadnoughts, which a single bomb may send to tho bottom.” Air. T/N. Brodriclc, Commissioner of Crown Lands, said that he should have, perhaps, ruled the motion out of order, as it referred to matters outside tho province of the Board altogether. Tho motion had been accepted by his predecessor, and Air. Lane had been disappointed ifi moving it several times, so that he (the speaker) would allow it to be moved, and would simply enter a protest against any reference, being made to anything that was outside the particular business of the Board. Mr. Groom seconded the motion joro forma t<o allow Air, Wright to move an amendment. Air. Wright then moved as an amendment —“That the Government bo congratulated upon the purchase of the Tangoio estate.” The amendment was seconded by Air. Ackroyd, and carried, Air. Lane alone dissenting.
