A REMARKABLE ESCAPE.

HANDCUFFED PRISONER JUMPS

OFF A TRAIN

[Per Press Association.]

CHRISTCHURCH, June 11. A young man named William James Murphy, who appeared at the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court to-day upon several charges of theft, and who was remanded, to Christchurch pending tho hearing of further charges against him, was being brought to town by the first express, and took advantage of a momentary opportunity to jump off the train. Murphy was in the custody of two police constables at the time, and was handcuffed, and when he jumped the train was approaching Hornby and travelling at the rate of nearly 30 miles an hour. The man fell clear of the line, and seemed uninjured by the fall, for when last seen he was getting through the railway fence with the object apparently of making for tho open country. The train was stopped at Hornsby and the constables alighted, and travelled back to where the man had jumped off. but could not find any trace of him, and a subsequent search made throughout the evening also proved fruitless. It is expected, however. that the man will be captured shortly.
