WAIAPU SUB-UNION. , The concluding matches in the first round of-the Waiapu Rugby Union were played on Saturday, the 12th inst. Two matches —Mangatuna v. Tokomaru (juniors), and Tologa v. Tokomaru (seniors) wore played, on the Tokomaru ground. There was a larger attendance to witness these two matches than has ever before been seen on the ground. Tologa Bay was Avell represented, both on the field and amongst the harrackers. The junior match, which commenced at 1 o’clock, Avas played first. For the first twenty minutes Alangatuna had the host of the play. After this, however, except for one brilliant run by Nikuamu, who scored from his own twenty-five, tho local team had the game all their own way. The score at half-time was: Tokomaru 3, Alangatuna nil, and at the close of the game . Tokomaru 12, Alangatuna 3. Doctor, Popple, C. Fair lie, and C. Babbington scored tries for Tokomaru, none; of which were converted. Air. H. Fairlie officiated as referee, to tho satisfaction of both sides. - Great- interest Avas taken over the Tologa v. Tokomaru senior match, on the- result of which practically depended tho championship. Tokomaru Avon the toss, and took the lower end of the field, against the sun. The play was fast, the forwards doing piost of the work. Tologa had tho best of the lineouts, Fletcher. Jolly, and Lincoln doing good work. In the scrums, also, Tologa had tho advantage, getting the ball continually, though their backs Avero too Avell marked to score. Tokomaru secured a mark directly iu front of the goal in the first spell, but Gerrard failed to convert. During the greater part of the second spell Tokomaru were on the defensive in their own twentyfive, and twei-e compelled to force several times. AVatchoj-n, the. Tologa Bay captain, played brilliantly. He seems to have a knack of always being where the ball is, or is going to. The local hacks never once got an opening. The game ended in a draw, neither side scoring. Air. H. Walker-, of Tologa Bay, had control of the game. If Tokomaru manages to beat Tologa next time they meet these teams will have to .play off for the championship provided each team twins all its other matches, which is most probable. The visiting teams-were-entertained at dinner at the hotel, and a Banco ill the hall was well patronised by tho four .teams. The match Alangatuna v. Tuparoa seniors came to a deadlock after about 15 minutes’ play. The referee, Air. Jack Somervell, ordered a: Tuparoa player off the field, and some of .the other Tuparoa players became unruly, •and their captain refused to go on with the game. The croAvd rushed the field, and more than one blow is supposed to have been struck.. Tuparoa promises to get severely dealt with, next time the Union meets. APPOINTMENT OF REFEREES.
