Times are said to be rather.hard’ for f• 1 majority-of those who gain a- livelihood on ‘ the YVellington wharves. t- p some of the waterside workers can fin’d money to gamble with if they can’t fiat! work (says the New Zealand ‘‘limes.”) Recently a somewhat, unique spectacle was to Be seen of a number of men’'near the Sailors’ Rest “rolling the dice” on the wharf, while a- coupm- or well-known detectives were less than 200yds away. As long as the detectives kept their distance play went on without interruption, hut when they shifted an air of innocence stole over the ring of gamblers, which would have der.e credit to a circle in a mor', pious sphere. The difficulty in vne detection of this illegal gambling is the positive identification of the participators.
