THE PUBLIC ABATTOIRS
ALLEGED “PASSING” OF A DISEASED ANIMAL. .
At the conclusion of the ordinary business of the Borough Council last night, Cr. Collins said he wished to ask if the Town Clerk had received any report regarding the. passing of a beast which Avas tuberculous for human consumption. The Toavii Clerk said that he had received no report from tho abattoirs on the subject. Cr. Collins asked then avliv the Government veterinary surgeon had gone and removed the seal from the beast, Avliich Avas passed by the gentleman they proposed to make the manager of their abattoirs. He (the speaker) had made a post-morten examination of the body of the beast, and found it- to be extensively diseased. He had been told by the veterinary surgeon that the passing of the beast had been a matter' of carelessness. He moved “That a special sub-committee, consisting of the Mayor! and Crs. Kirk. Smith, Darton, Clayton, and the mover, be appointed to go into the matter and report to the Council, in the interests of public safety.” The Mayor said that the Toavu Clerk had been telephoned for,, and the Inspector had been sent up to see into the matter. Cr. Collins: After it had been passed bv the Inspector? v .. The Mayor . seconded the motion, holding that such an enquiry should be held. , , ' ~ T ,. Cr. Darton supported the motion, H tho statements Avere true, die appointment of the Inspector as manager or tho abattoirs should he held over for consideration. . . The resolution Avas carried unanimously.
