HOCKEY.

SHIELD MATCHES. The hockey championship matches were continued at the Victoria Domain yesterday. The games were played on No. 2 ground, which, being very rough, militated to a great extent against fast and accurate play. CITY (2) v. KIA KARA (0).

This was a yery even game from start to finish, some fairly good play being exhibited by both teams. The forwards on each side showed a great lack of shooting power, while the defence was, in both cases, fairly .strong. City’s goals were obtained by Corbett and Grinlinton.

For tbe winners, Armstrong, Fox. Day, Corbett, and Grinlinton played well; while for tho losers Garrett, Grant and McLean were about the best.

The game was capably controlled by Mr. P. W. Bushnell. WEST END (4) v. CIVIL SERVICE (1) The scores in this game do not altogether represent the difference between the teams, as the losers had a good deal of tho play. West End, however, showed superior combination, and goals were scored for them by Bright (3) and Pilcher. Payne was responsible for the goal scored for Civil Service. For West End, Olsen, Pirie, McLaclilnn, and Bright played very well; and the most prominent players on the losing side were Payne, Hargreaves, and Stagpoole. Mr. Armstrong (City) was an efficient referee. GISBORNE (2) v. TURANGA (0). A team of ladies from Patutahi district tried conclusion with the ladies of the Gisborne Club on the Childers Road reserve, opposite the Domain, but after a good game, were compelled to acknowledge defeat by 2 goals to ni *Misses C. Walters and M. Winter scored for the winners, and Misses Al. Moore and N. Cockerill also played well Miss K. Sherratt was easily the best of the visiting ladies The game was refereed by Messrs J• J. Martin and S. Roderick. . V return match between the two teams will be played at Patutahi in about a fortnight. . i„ v ’q At- the conclusion of yesterday s rrame tho visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the Gisborne ladies at Mrs. Erskinc’s rooms.
