WELLINGTON ABATTOIRS LOAN

TREASURER ADMITS MAYOR’S VIEW CORRECT.

[Per Press Association.]

WELLINGTON. June 17

The question of the abattoirs loan came before the City Council again tonight. At last meeting tlie new Mayor, Dr. Newman, made a. statement on tho city finances, in which he said that the loan of £15,000 raised for the abattoirs bad been used for other purposes. Tlie following day the City Treasurer made a statement to the press, which contradicted Dr. Newman’s interpretation of the transaction. At the meeting to-night, a letter was read from the Treasurer, admitting that th© [Mayor’s view of tho matter was correct, and apologising for having made a statement to the contrary. _ In view of the Treasurer's long services, the Council decided to take no further action. The position now is that £4BOO of the abattoirs loan has been paid back, and £10,200 has to come from the district funds in order to put the loan account in a proper state.
